Product Review (submitted on April 29, 2012):
I have owned a 5wt version of this rod for about a year now. Overall I'd have to say that this rod has to be underrated to not be the rage of the market. Ross has been known for great reals for years and with continued rods like this they will make a bigger impact on the rod market. It casts as well as my Winston and Sage rods though not quite as fast. But just barely slower, almost not even noticeable.
I was looking for something under $500 when I picked up the Ross, and as well as it has performed I doubt I buy a "higher end" rod again. I see no need to spend the extra money on Sage, Winston, Orvis, for minimal differences. Honestly I don't see any difference that Justifies an extra $500, in fact I don't see why Ross has the price set so low on this rod, it could easily pull $4-600.
So to sum it up.... The economy sucks, and with the Ross Essence FC you get the same performance as the big name big price rods, at roughly a third of the cost. And we all could use a few extra bucks in our pockets. This is a great rod for beginner to seasoned pro. I have been hammering arctic grayling and trout up here in Alaska with the Essence FC and will continue to do so, can't wait to try the RX!!
